 An Adjuster, often referred to as a Claims Adjuster, is an insurance professional who is responsible for evaluating the damage caused to persons or property, after an accident occurs, in an effort to reach a fair settlement between the insured (policyholder) and insurer (typically an insurance company).
Adjusters may be called upon to assess damage in one of these situations - Property Claims or Liability Claims:- Property Claims
Damage to covered property, such as automobiles, homes or watercraft
- Liability Claims
Personal injury or property damage arising out of liability situations, such as an automobile accident or some other type of negligent behavior Types of AdjustersThere are three types of Adjusters:- Staff Adjusters - those professionals who are employed by an insurance company
- Public Adjusters - those professionals who are employed by a policyholder
- Independent Adjusters – those professionals who are neither employed by an insurance company nor a policyholder
Adjuster Training
Most states require state certification in order to practice as an insurance adjuster, by virtue of passing a state licensing examination. Further, Adjusters generally are required to meet Continuing Education requirements annually in order to maintain their license.
